Spring Reset Training: A Fresh Start for You and Your Dog

It’s finally starting to feel like spring—the perfect season for enjoyable walks, pet-friendly patios, and more time spent outdoors… or at least, that’s the goal.

If getting outside with your dog hasn’t felt quite as easy or enjoyable as you hoped, you’re not alone. After a long winter of limited routines, less structure, quieter neighborhoods, and more indoor time, many dogs (and their people) are feeling a little out of sync.

The good news? You’re not alone and you don’t need to start over—you just need to start!

What is a dog training ‘Spring Reset’?

A spring reset is whatever you want it to be! It’s a time to set new goals, restart training and routine, and tailor your training to your real life goals for the warmer weather and busier routines.

It’s not about perfection or promising a complete transformation, instead think of it as a chance to refresh foundational skills, rebuild or start consistency in your training goals, and create routines that work for you and your dog in day-to-day life!.

Because the goal isn’t just a “well-trained dog”—it’s a dog you can confidently bring into your actual life this season.

Why Now? Spring is the Perfect Time

Anytime is the right time for a training reset! Spring naturally brings more walks and outdoor activities, social environments and distractions, and opportunities to include your dog. Whether it’s sitting outside on a pet friendly patio, walking at the park, or going to kids sporting events, people love to bring their pets!

All these things also mean your dog needs stronger real-life skills, better focus around distractions, and the ability to settle and relax in new environments. Getting ahead of this now makes everything smoother—and more enjoyable—heading into summer.

Signs Your Dog (and you) Might Benefit from a Reset

A reset might be the right fit if:

  • Walks feel chaotic, pulling, or overstimulating

  • Your dog struggles to settle in public or at home

  • Skills they once knew feel inconsistent

  • You’re avoiding certain situations because they feel like “too much”

  • You’re not sure what to focus on next

Spring Enrichment: The Missing Piece

Training doesn’t happen in a vacuum—and one of the most overlooked pieces of progress is meeting your dog’s daily enrichment needs. When dogs have appropriate outlets for their energy and instincts, everything else becomes easier.

Here are a few simple, spring related ways to incorporate enrichment into your routine:

  1. Sniff Walks (Let Them Explore)

Let your dog slow down, sniff, and explore their environment. When safe, let them choose what path to take. Sniffing provides mental stimulation that helps reduce excess energy and improve focus and relaxation!

  1.  Outdoor Scatter Feeding

Take meals outside and let your dog forage in the grass. This taps into natural instincts, encourages sniffing, and aids in decompression

  1. Take your scent work or “find it” games outside!

Hide treats or toys and encourage your dog to search. This builds problem-solving skills and gives your dog a productive outlet.

  1. Outdoor settling or people watching

Practice relaxing outside with a chew or snuffle mat. Learning to settle is just as important as movement. This provides a great training opportunity and socialization! Visit new environments without expectations—just observe and reward calm behavior.

What Next? How to Get Started!

Knowing what to do is one thing. Having the time, consistency, and structure to actually follow through—especially during a busy season—is another.

That’s where many people start to feel stuck and put it on the back burner. As a trainer, I recommend choosing one goal to start with. Set aside five minutes a day to work on it!
